Stock cabinets come in a fixed set of sizes and finishes. Semi-custom cabinets come from the same kind of manufacturer line but give you more sizes, more modifications and more finish choices. Which fits depends on your layout and your walls, not on the label.
If you are planning a kitchen in Palm Coast or elsewhere in Flagler County, you will hear both terms quickly. Here is what they mean in plain language.
Stock cabinets
Stock cabinets are made in standard sizes and a set range of door styles and finishes. The cabinet boxes come in fixed widths, and gaps are filled with filler strips and panels.
- Good for: kitchens where the layout is straightforward and the standard sizes fit the walls well.
- Trade-offs: fewer choices, and less room to adjust for odd wall lengths or awkward corners.
- Cost direction: stock lines generally cost less than semi-custom lines, which is a big reason people choose them.
What makes a cabinet semi-custom?
Semi-custom cabinets come from a manufacturer’s line, like stock, but with more options. You can usually choose from more sizes, door styles and finishes, and some lines let you change a cabinet’s depth or height or add pull-outs and organizers. Which options exist depends on the line.
- Good for: kitchens with unusual wall lengths, a particular look you want, or storage needs a standard cabinet does not meet.
- Trade-offs: more choices means more decisions, and the quote usually goes up with the options you add.
Are semi-custom cabinets good quality?
The label tells you about choice, not quality. Stock and semi-custom both come from manufacturers’ lines, and what changes with semi-custom is the range of sizes, finishes and options. To judge a cabinet, look at samples in person. We bring them to your kitchen on a free in-home visit.
What about built-to-order cabinets?
A third tier exists: cabinets built from scratch to your measurements by a cabinet shop. We do not build cabinets to order. We supply stock and semi-custom lines from manufacturers and install them. On site we do cut and trim standard cabinets to fit your space, such as fillers, scribing to an uneven wall and simple cut-downs. It is basic fitting work, not made-to-order cabinetry, so the rest of this post sticks to stock and semi-custom.
How to choose
Ask yourself four questions:
- Does the layout work as it is? If you are keeping the footprint, stock may be enough. If you want to change walls, add an island or fit a tricky corner, semi-custom gives you more room.
- Which things matter most? Door style and finish, or storage details, or the budget?
- What are the walls like? Odd wall lengths are where stock cabinets leave gaps.
- Are the cabinets you have already worth keeping? If the boxes are sound, refacing what you already have can be the better value. We will tell you honestly if that is the case.
Two kitchens of the same size can quote very differently. Door style, material, finish, hardware, how many doors and drawer fronts there are, and whether the layout changes all move the quote, which is why we measure your kitchen before we quote it.
